Explore the wonder of East Asia through a Spatial Lens

Have you ever wanted to travel to Japan, China, or the Koreas? In this class we take a metaphorical ride to the East Asian region of the world where economics, demography and history collide to create a fascinating survey of an important part pf our World. Through fun assignments and rigorous study, we will determine why East Asia is such an important region to the US and how its complicated history still determines how the region is viewed today.

See our national parks and other lands in action, and learn how to make them better


MWF 9:00am, KMBL 230, Dr. Plewe

Do you love our amazing outdoors? This course tells the story of why and how we preserve our greatest natural and historic spaces at the national, state, local, and even international levels. We will take field trips to explore a variety of these places in Utah. You will also learn practical planning skills in how land managers and the public work together to make these places better, culminating in a real-world final project.

307 Spatial Analysis of Environmental Data

Biogeography + Remote Sensing + Spatial Analysis + Planning!

Learn a range of field data collection and spatial analysis methods to quantify change over time in the Environment. If the thought of Geog 322 is daunting, Geog 307 covers about half of the same methods but in a more applied way. You will complete a project of interest to you, culminating in a Fulton Conference poster.

311 Intermediate GIS

Take the next step with GIS


MWF 1:00am, KMBL 640, Dr. Morgan

This course refreshes and builds upon the knowledge you gained in GEOG 212 with a focus on preparing you for the workforce. We learn GIS-based modeling, as well as more about GNSS, data creation, and general spatial analysis through labs that add maps and materials for a GIS portfolio. The class culminates in a final project driven by your interests and questions.

245 Geography of Utah

Explore Utah. In Utah.


Spring, F 10:00am, in a van with Dr. Plewe

This course will be 100% on the road as we explore the natural and human geography of Utah first hand! Each Friday will be an all-day field trip to a different part of the state (with a couple free overnight stays and a week off), where we will see our unique history, our diverse cultures, our varied natural landscapes, and our growing economy. An important focus will be on how we tell others (from K-12 students to tourists) our story.
