Our Research
Research in BYU’s Department of Geography reflects the university’s commitment to learning “by study and by faith.” Faculty and students engage in projects that span local, national, and global scales—addressing pressing environmental, social, and technological challenges. The department’s work integrates physical geography, human geography, and geospatial technologies to better understand Earth’s systems and human-environment interactions.
BYU geographers conduct fieldwork from Utah’s Wasatch Front to tropical islands in the Pacific, from the Rocky Mountains to developing regions in Africa and Latin America. Research methods are equally diverse, including spatial data science, satellite remote sensing, field observation, survey research, and computational modeling. Many projects involve undergraduate researchers and align with BYU’s focus on mentored learning.
