BYU Geography faculty recently participated in the For the Benefit of the World Conference, an event focused on showcasing how university research can support the mission of the Church and serve communities worldwide.

A wheat field outside Elberta Utah has become one of the most technologically advanced agricultural research sites in the world. BYU researchers recently installed 86 Smart Bluetooth Stakes across a 124 acre commercial field, creating one of the most detailed soil moisture maps ever produced in an active agricultural setting.

Dr. Grayson R. Morgan and his team conducted a study titled "The Dynamic Nature of Wrack: An Investigation into Wrack Movement and Impacts on Coastal Marshes Using sUAS". Wrack is essentially dead plant material that forms mats in these marshes. It’s a natural part of the ecosystem, but it can have significant impacts on the health and vitality of the marsh.

In Winter semester of 2024, the Geography department initiated a Photo, Art and Map contest centered on the topic “Genius Loci”, or the spirit of place.

On Friday, February 26, 2024, Geography students presented at the Utah Conference for Undergraduate Research at Utah Valley University in Orem, UT. Every year, the Conference provides students from across the state with a platform to gather and present their research.

Embarking on a cross-country journey, Dr. Samuel Otterstrom delved into the historical fabric of Florida and Virginia, where over 3,500 historical markers unveil tales of the past. Brigham Young University sponsored this collaborative study, with Diana Hood, a recent Geography graduate, and several current BYU students contributing to categorizing these markers.
